Bumbo

Bumbo began with a grandfather, an engineer and a baby who refused to lie down. When Johan Buitendag Sr noticed his grandson Daniel straining to sit upright and see the world, he did what engineers do. He solved the problem. Working from his small family engineering business in South Africa, he sculpted the first Bumbo Floor Seat by hand, experimenting with foam from the automotive industry until he found the right softness and support. That work earned him the Chairman's Award for Best Advance in Technology from the South African Bureau of Standards in 2002.

What started as a solution for one determined baby has since become one of the most recognised names in baby seating worldwide. Every product is developed in consultation with parents, caregivers and paediatric specialists, and manufactured to meet both European and US safety standards.

The goal, in the words of the family that still runs the business, has never changed: to create long-lasting products that support families from the first time a baby sits up to the day they no longer need the help.
