What steps should I take to help my baby sleep safely?

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) advise as follows:

  • Place your baby on their back to sleep.
  • Do not let your baby get too hot or cold. To check their temperature you can feel their neck or body (not hands or feet). Use lightweight bedding in layers so you can add or remove layers as necessary.
  • Place a thermometer above the cot to monitor the room temperature. 18 degrees Celsius or 65 degrees Farenheit is the ideal room temperature.
  • All bedding should be tucked in around the mattress, covers should be no higher than armpit level and the arms should not be tucked in.
  • Do not cover your baby's head
  • Place your baby with their feet to the foot of the cot to prevent them wriggling down under the covers
  • If your baby is under 12 months, do not use any soft bedding, such as duvets, quilts or pillows. Instead, use one or more layers of light blankets. Do not prop a young baby up with pillows or cushions.
  • If your baby is unwell, seek medical advice promptly
  • Do not smoke during pregnancy and keep your child in a smoke-free environment.
