1. Why is it so important to get the right mattress for my baby? Sleep is the single most important ingredient to a healthy, happy life, for both parents and baby. Without sleep, energy levels drop, immune systems crash and tempers flare. Our mattresses have been proven to help babies sleep through the night. This is due to the greater level of comfort experienced by the baby. The natural fibres are key to this added comfort - they allow air to circulate through the mattress keeping the baby at a regular, healthy temperature. There are no chemicals used in our mattresses so your baby will not breathe any toxins in such as chemical fire retardants or plastic toxins, which are found in other baby mattresses. The natural fibres also provide superior support and will not dip like other baby mattresses.
2. Do I need a new mattress for each child? The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) states that each baby should have a new mattress.
3. What makes Natural mattresses so good? The mattresses we stock are free of all chemicals and synthetic materials to give you every reassurance that your baby has a safe, comfortable and healthy start to life. Our mattresses are breathable, chemical free, non-allergenic and more supportive, comfortable, durable and healthy than any other baby mattress you can buy.
4. Do they pass British safety standards? Yes, of course. Safety is of paramount importance to us. Not only do they pass all the required British safety standards (BS EN597, BS 7177, BS 1877 Part 10) but the mattresses are made by the only UK manufacturer to do so without using any chemical fire retardants.
6. Do the mattresses have a plastic cover? No. The mattresses are covered with an unbleached cotton herringbone for maximum breathability and comfort. The cover is removable and machine washable at 60°C. Most existing baby mattresses have a plastic cover, which prevents air circulating through the mattress increasing the chances of the baby overheating. It is not only dangerous for a baby to overheat but also causes discomfort and disrupted sleep.
7. If my baby is sick on the mattress how do I clean it? If the bed linen is penetrated and the mattress cover is sullied then remove it and machine wash it at 60°C to kill any bacteria. All of our protectors and sheets are machine washable at 60°C for maximum hygiene - bacteria and dustmites are killed at 57°C.
8. Do I need a mattress protector? What bed linen do I need? For babies, we recommend that you protect the mattress with one of our flannelette protectors with a cotton sheet on top. This combination should absorb any sick, dribble, moisture etc. If the mattress cover is sullied then remove it and machine wash it at 60°C to kill any germs. Bacteria and dustmites are killed at 57°C. All of our protectors and sheets are machine washable at 60 degrees. For ‘sicky’ babies and toddlers going through potty training, we recommend our breathable poly-backed (waterproof) flannelette protector, the most comfortable waterproof protector available.
9. How do I wash & dry my sheets and protectors? All of our flannelette protectors and cotton sheets are machine washable at 60°C. They are made slightly larger than the dimensions indicated to allow for a first wash shrink. You can also tumble dry and iron all sheets.
10. Should I use a sleeping bag or bedding? There is no wrong or right answer here – it is a matter of personal preference. A sleeping bag is a great alternative to top sheets and blankets, and suitable from approximately 3 months. You can tuck up your baby in a sleeping bag safe in the knowledge that however much wriggling or kicking they do they will still be kept warmly covered at night.
11. Do your mattresses need to be ‘turned’ The mattress fillings are naturally very resilient and durable but it is good practice to turn any mattress every 3 months.
