So what is merino wool and how does it work?
Parents that have bought Bambino Merino sleeping bags so far really do love them. In fact just over 40% of our customers have made a repeat purchase within a few months of their initial purchase.
Fine merino wool is a natural, breathable fibre that creates a microclimate around baby’s body – circulating or trapping air as required to regulate body temperature throughout the night. No more waking up cold when the temperature drops in the early hours! It is lightweight, warm and capable of holding three times its weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch. If baby gets too warm, it draws excess moisture away from their skin and releases it in to the atmosphere. Conversely if baby gets cold, it holds a layer of warm air around the body, preventing heat from being lost.
Guidelines
Merino wool is not as difficult to care for as you might think and more forgiving than traditional wool garments. Of course the best way to prolong its life and maintain the softness and strength of wool is to hand wash at low temperature using a mild wool detergent.
As busy parents ourselves we know it is almost impossible to find time for hand washing so our garments can be machine washed provided the following golden rules are followed.
- Always use an approved wool detergent such as Ecover Delicate for Silk & Wool, Persil Silk & Wool or Woolite. Don’t presume your usual non-bio detergent will be fine, if you check the label most say they are not suitable for wool
- Wash at a maximum temperature of 40˚c – any hotter and the wool will ‘felt’ and shrink
- Spin gently
- Do not soak
- Fabric conditioners or softeners are not recommended (or needed)
- Gently reshape the garment as you remove it from the washing machine
- Do not use bleach
- Merino doesn’t hold a lot of water so dries quickly on a drying rack or over a banister or radiator. If you have a tumble drier, make sure it has a low heat setting and use on this setting only
- Dry away from direct sunlight
- Cool iron if required (we have never found the need nor desire to do this)
Merino is naturally stain and odour resistant and requires less frequent washing than other fabrics – hooray!
We recommend unzipping your baby sleeping bag and airing it over the cot rail in between sleeps to cut down on washing.
Features
What are the benefits of using a baby sleeping bag?
Baby sleeping bags are a safer option than traditional bedding as baby cannot slip down inside the sleeping bag like s/he can with sheets and blankets.
Sleeping bags help reinforce bedtime routines as your baby learns to associate wearing their sleeping bag with going to sleep. They are perfect for active babies as they cannot be kicked off and prevent babies from waking up cold during the night. They also prevent babies’ legs getting caught in cot bars and discourage older babies from climbing out of their cots.
Unlike many baby sleeping bags, Bambino Merino sleeping bags are made from 100% natural fibres. They do not contain any synthetic filling which can make babies sweat and overheat. Our sleeping bags keep your baby at a safe and comfortable temperature throughout the night.
Bambino Merino sleeping bags are easily transportable in their own travel bag to help babies settle at bedtime when visiting friends and grandparents or on holiday.
The adjustable design of our sleeping bags means one size fits from 2 - 3 months to two years of age, offering excellent value for money.
What is the TOG rating of Bambino Merino sleeping bags?
Our sleeping bags differ from most baby sleeping bags in that they are made from 100% natural breathable fibres - without any synthetic filling. Therefore they do not have a fixed TOG. The fine merino wool lining helps baby to naturally regulate his/her body temperature, ensuring he/she won’t overheat (or get too cold). Warm in winter and cool in summer, our sleeping bags eliminate the need to purchase different TOGs as the same sleeping bag is designed to be worn in all seasons.
can my baby sleep in a Bambino Merino sleeping bag all year round?
Yes! Bambino Merino sleeping bags are perfect for all year round wear. They are lightweight yet warm. Merino fibres work to create a microclimate around your baby’s body, gaining or losing heat as required to produce warmth in cool conditions and enhance coolness in warm conditions. This helps your baby to regulate his/her temperature throughout the night. Simply adjust the layers of underwear or sleepwear worn beneath the sleeping bag to suit the climate.
What should my baby wear underneath her Bambino Merino sleeping bag
External factors such as the temperature of the baby’s nursery and your baby’s health determine what clothing should be worn underneath our sleeping bags. We always recommend you dress your baby in natural fibres such as cotton or merino wool for sleeping. This ensures your baby’s skin can breathe.
The layers required for a comfortable nights’ sleep will vary from baby to baby. Simply adjust the level of clothing your baby is wearing to suit the room temperature.
As a guide, in summer time a baby will usually be comfortable wearing one layer beneath their Bambino Merino sleeping bag i.e. a short sleeved cotton bodysuit or lightweight pyjamas. In high summer or in warmer climates, a sleeveless cotton vest or even just a nappy will be all baby needs beneath his/her sleeping bag, especially for daytime sleeps on very hot days. In winter time and in areas with cooler night time temperatures, two layers of long sleeved cotton or merino wool will keep baby warm and comfortable. Our superfine merino wool bodysuits and sleepsuits are ideal for layering beneath our sleeping bags.
Each sleeping bag now comes with a handy room temperature / layering guide as below:
Room Temperature Suggested layers beneath your Bambino Merino sleeping bag
17 - 19°c A long sleeve merino bodysuit or vest
Plus a long sleeve merino sleepsuit or pyjamas
20 - 23°c A short sleeve merino or cotton bodysuit or vest
Plus a long sleeve merino or cotton sleepsuit or pyjamas
24 - 26°c A short sleeve merino or cotton bodysuit or vest only
27 - 30°c Short sleeve cotton bodysuit or vest or just a nappy on its own
What bedding should I use with my Bambino Merino sleeping bag?
Our sleeping bags are designed to be used on their own – without top sheets or
blankets. A flat or fitted sheet on the mattress is all you need. Never use a baby
sleeping bag with a quilt or duvet.
Do I need more than one Bambino Merino sleeping bag?
Ideally yes. Babies spend a lot of time sleeping (well over 9,000 hours in their first two years!) so we recommend you alternate between the use of two Bambino Merino sleeping bags. As parents ourselves we have been thankful for a second sleeping bag on many occasions when an unsettled stomach or particularly soiled nappy has meant the first one is in the wash.
How long will my baby fit a Bambino Merino sleeping bag?
Our sleeping bags are great value and are designed to fit an average sized infant / toddler from 2 - 3 months right through to two years of age.
How long are your sleeping bags?
Our baby sleeping bags measure approximately 95cm from shoulder to hem. The larger size measures approximately 118cm from shoulder to hem.
Won’t wool itch my baby’s skin?
Merino wool fibres are only a fraction of the diameter of traditional wool fibres and are much finer. We only use superfine merino wool in our baby clothing which feels like silk against baby’s sensitive skin.
Even babies with eczema can usually wear superfine merino wool without their skin becoming irritated.
Why don’t the sleeping bags have sleeves?
This ensures air circulation around baby’s body. Babies that sleep with traditional sheets and blankets rarely sleep with their arms underneath the bedding. Layering a long sleeved merino wool bodysuit and a sleepsuit or pyjamas beneath our sleeping bags will ensure your baby is warm, comfortable and well adapted to their environment in cooler weather.
It is normal for babies to have cold hands and feet due to their still-developing circulation systems and is not an indication that they are cold. Feeling the nape of the neck or tummy are better body parts to touch when determining body temperature.
